True. In the old days of finishing schools, a well rounded education plus manners and speech are inclusive.

These days, all it takes is money and a reality show. If ONLY these women and the girls who emulate them can hear what American men say about them behind their backs. I assure you, it's not flattering.

Will have to check again. Remembered watching it when I was growing up. For me, Father Knows Best's Jane Wyatt is true American royalty. From the Van Rensselaer family in real life: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jane_Wyatt So much poise and a bit of cheek.

It's a reflection of how women have - to a certain extent - gone out of control with their demands after the "me, me, me" generation....which turned into the "i, i, i" generation (i-phone, i-tunes, i-pad) ;-) It doesn't help that so many of the girls in the States are literally driving desperate men to go overseas. And those women overseas KNOW their vulnerability, so they play it up. They know what is going on here. They know our women are out of control, emulating Kardashians, reality show bridezillas, pre-nups with an attorney behind her. Whatever happened to the "us" generation, the "we" generation in a marriage?

I agree. Some men are so gullible and desperate, it's sad. Everyone wants to believe in the fairytale, but they suffer terribly due to lack of common sense and a little healthy skepticism. Just asking, "What's in it for her?" Is very important. I know it's tough out there. Our son is a young man now and while he was raised to have morals and values, he has yet to meet one "decent' girl.

I love "The Dick Van Dyke Show." Laura Petrie was just "it" the very last of the traditional homemakers. She was pretty, sweet, domestic, adoring and obedient to her husband. Also, when Rob was just learning about Laura (when they'd just met) he found out from one of her friends that one of her hobbies was "collecting recipes" ! Isn't that perfect Stepford Wife, Ideal Wife - stuff?!

I agree that posture and poise matter just as much as what one is wearing, if not more so. But the clothes do help to inform the demeanor and that is why so many girls and women have lost grace and decorum in posture and how they sit and stand. The uniform of blue jeans has caused an appalling loss of modesty and beauty to occur. Also, it's not enough to copy Grace Kelly or Jackie Kennedy in fashion. What made them special was that they'd had training in ballet, etiquette and manners...plus the best of liberal arts education: classic literature, art, music...etc. If one wishes to emulate their appearance, it's more than outward copy ...it's about undergoing an entire education in the area of self improvement.

Too bad most of these can only be found randomly on TV or through purchase of the VHS or DVD. They're not on Netflix, otherwise I'd love to watch them ... as part of my SW research!

I love, love, love Doris Day! One of her best movies ever: "The Thrill of it All" with James Garner and Doris Day. The EPITOME of a feminine wife and mother and a very masculine and dominant husband and father.
